Herpes and dating

I’ve been seeing someone for a while now and he gets cold sores. He once cancelled plans because he had developed a cold sore, so he’s considerate and honest. Anyway, I was misinformed and thought that herpes could only be contracted from someone with an active blister/cold sore but I now know that it can be contracted at any moment. We do engage in oral sex, and I now know that oral herpes can be transferred to the genitals this way.

My friends say it’s time to stop seeing him because he has it, but I really really care about him. He’s an amazing guy and it seems so unfair to stop seeing him because of something out of his control. I have two friends with herpes and they say it’s absolutely painful and not worth the risk. So heartbroken, could really use some advice or guidance if anyone has any, thank you.
