IUD and BV

Jess • Hello, I work in a sex shop for a living! Yay! Feel free to ask me questions about sex, contraception and anything Gyno!
Hey! I'm coming up to my 5th month with the copper IUD and on the whole loving it.
However, the past two months, right before my period I've noticed a fishy smell and then it ends up with me having BV. I'm starting to smell again this month and I'm now worried that it's going to be a recurrent thing and I'll have to get my IUD removed!
Has anyone else had this problem, what was the solution for you?

Recurrent BV with mirena - my gyno suggested the gel treatment because bacteria can collect in the strings and the gel would hopefully get rid of it. I should also tell you that I got a yeast infection after the gel (even though I was taking probiotics etc.)

Go to your local drugstore and get probiotics. It'll say vaginal health. They are about $20 for 30. This works. I get BV quite often 😑 antibiotics work well too BUT flagyl leave a horrible taste. If you can't find the probiotics I can post a pic.

IUD's can cause BV and yeast infections.  I've done tons of research. Not all doctors will admit it but I battled with it for years and finally found an awesome doctor who listened to me and didn't make me think I was crazy.  She said that iud's are foreign to our bodies and can cause different reactions.  Research boric acid suppositories or ask your doc.  It helps to balance out your body's ph levels.  I didn't have the cooper iud, I have the murina.  I was having other issues too and ended up having to have mine moved, a d&c, and a new one put in.  Funny thing is that I haven't had any bv or yeast infections since I had that done.

I had other issues too and also got mine removed. I got recurrent vaginitis (external skin soreness and sensitivity etc that was made worse by sex) was your experience similar?

Speaking from someone who gets bv several times a year, and I also have the iud( even though it's not related) I can tell you that it most likely will be required time and time again. I was prescribed the vaginal gel since the pills make me sick but My doctor told me that she worried about the fact that the iud might block the gel from reaching areas the gel needed to be 😩😩. But to combat this she just over prescribed me the meds so that I can pick them up whenever I had a feeling that it was coming back so maybe suggest that? It'll save u frequent trips to the doctor.

So she'd give me maybe 10 prescriptions and I'm free to pick them up whenever I need them ALSO I forgot to put this is in the original post... Instead of doing the original 5-7 day treatments once she has me finish one prescription she told me to take the meds 3xa week to keep the infection gone

Yes since bv can be like any other infection and cause scarring to the ovaries and things of left untreated for a while it's best to jump on it as soon as see the symptoms

Yep! I had it with my IUD last week (copper). Went to the doctor and they gave me antibiotics for it
