Does giving formula at night (as opposed to breast milk) help the baby sleep longer because they are more full? Or is it just an old wife’s tale?

Most definitely not true. 
Breastmilk changes throughout the day. At night it has natural production of melatonin making baby sleep better. May be not longer but it’s a better sleep.

Breastmilk will always be better for baby but if you can't breastfeed nothing wrong with formula.
As for sleep, breastmilk contains melatonin which kicks in evening time. Some pumping moms make the mistake of giving day time breastmilk overnight which contains hormones that encourage wakefulness intended for day. Make sure if you're pumping and someone else is giving the milk to give milk expressed only at night. Babies in early weeks will not have any lengthy sleep (exceptions apply as every baby is different) due to need for frequent feeds. However as they age they should sleep fine.

Not true, but switching to bottle feeding at night was a game changer for our lady. She was waking every 39 minutes starting at 4 months and we switched to bottle feeding at night at 5 months out of desperation and she started to only wake twice. She just wanted the boobie cuddles and when she didn't get them she slept longer.

Its an olds wives tale. It may work for some babies, but it isnt guaranteed. The more you substitute formula, the less milk you make. Unless you pump as much as your baby eats formula.

It’s not true at all and no evidence to state otherwise 
My first was breastfed and slept through the night from 2 month 
My second is formula fed and slept through the night from 2 months as well
Every baby is different and will sleep through the night when they’re ready not from how you feed them

No not necessarily. The difference is that you can actually see the ounces baby eat compared to what they eat at the breast. Breast milk has hinde milk and fore milk and if they don’t eat a full feeding at the breast to get the fore milk then they will inevitably wake up more because that is what has more fats and proteins that keep baby fuller. 
With formula you see the exact ounces they eat and they get a more “rounded” protein/fat/hydration since it’s a powdered mix formula and what not.

My first started daycare and more regular formula at the same time. She started sleeping through the night at the same time too. So I can’t tell if it was the formula that made her sleep better, or if she was just more tired from daycare. There was correlation, but that might not be causation.
