Leukocytes in urine

I had my yearly wellness checkup, and my urine test came back as positive for leukocyte esterase (level was 1+). My white blood cell count was in the normal range.

I did have my period when I did the urine test and I know that blood can contaminate the sample. They told me it was fine to leave it but now I’m thinking I should’ve done the test on a different day.

What I’m wondering is.... can menstruation cause leukocyte esterase to be present in the urine?

I know it can also indicate possible inflammation in the urinary tract or kidneys so I’m hoping it’s not that. I won’t receive a call back from my doctor for a few days so I thought somebody here might have more info. Thank you!
