How do you know a dog is about to go into labor?

How do you know when a dog is about to give birth? She's a pit bull I posted about her earlier. Her butt is swollen but she's not acting like she's in any pain and she's hyper. What will she do when she starts to hurt? She's also eating her own poop.

The first thing they'll do is grab blankets, their bed, etc if they have access to them and drag them to a secluded area to prepare a spot for the babies. Some of them show no signs of feeling pain and others will start whining and yelping. All dogs are different but you'll typically notice some kind of abnormal behavior right before

Mine started packing and whining and pa tung really bad,couldn't sleep because of it and hr later she was popping out pups

Mine got terrified of her belly and kept growling at her belly and biting at it. She roamed the house all day. Then around dinnertime she started panting like crazy and drinking up her water pail over an over as I refilled it. Then she went and found a fluffy blanket - on my bed! - she was always an opportunist and saw her opportunity. She pulled it off my bed and pulled it over to her doggy bed. She then made a bed like a pro. Seriously it was straight on folded. She took one end pulled it all the way over until it was a giant square. Then she tucked the corners in, lay down and a baby head appeared. 
She huffed and puffed and licked the babies coming out. She had I think it was 8 and then freaked out. I made her feed them before she went out for a run immediately after. She came back a couple hours later after running the farm nonstop that whole time. She was never a maternal dog. And she had missed running because at the end she was just groggy and super flatulent.
I would have to bribe her into the house to feed her hungry newborns. She would stand there crying as the babies stood on their back legs to reach the nipples. I would force her to lay down for a few minutes in exchange for meat. She would just lay their crying. But she was a runner. She would run and run full pelt around the perimeter of the farm after feeding the pups. She lost all the baby weight within a couple days and let me tell you that girl ATE while she was pregnant. 
It was a very interesting experience.

My dog hid in a dark corner and I had to sit with her if I left she followed me wining. And as I sat with her she was nesting, she would get her blankets and move them around over and over again trying to get comfortable. She made sure everything around her was clean, by licking it clean  And when she started having her pups I could tell she was pushing she would hold her breath while she pushed and breathing harder then norm with contractions. They will make their "nest" with blankets, stuffed animals, their toys, etc. They will get to painting very quickly and some may whine. I would let her do her thing on her own. Make sure you do not step in unless she is having issues with them being stuck or in our case our dog was popping them out so quickly we have to help break the sacks. Just let her do her thing and sit from a far to watch and listen :) Do you know how many pups she is having?
