You and partners ttc timeline?

Question

I plan on bringing this info to my husband because I don’t think I want to wait 1-2 years to TTC. I'm currently in grad school working on my doctorate in cello performance. Would love to start TTC in September so a baby would be a possibility after I graduate in May.
Goals before TTC in Sept.
1. Get rid of our extra car husband just had to have and now just sits around.
2. Quit buying extra things/budget this and have an alotted weekly spending amount
3. Declutter house
4. Husband better paying job? He’s worked at the same place for 5 years and there’s no room for growth any more and he really deserves to be making more.
5. I would like to make more money over the summer.
 
Pros and Cons to TTC and being pregnant my last year of grad school.
PROS:
-cheaper hospital costs due to school health insurance
-more flexible schedule/understanding professors
-I’m still young
 
CONS:
-Not a lot of leftover money at the end of each month

We decided to wait to start trying until we were both established in our careers and we had purchased and remodeled our starter home. We were 25 and 26 at that time. Now we are still trying more than 3 years later. You can't always plan things down to the last element. It won't always be perfect.

We started trying so that I would be due at end of my school year and be off all summer for maternity leave. It took us a year and a half and baby came in November. For our second we didn’t plan on a time, we learned our lesson haha. That one came in December and also took a year and a half to conceive. Not sure how baby 3 will go when we start really trying haha. My best advice is to not put a time expectation on TTC, that only adds pressure and makes more stress in my opinion. I I agree with all the leading up stuff though. Build your savings up if possible. Take what you sell that car for and put it away for maternity leave and baby stuff. Creating a budget that reflects what you would expect to spend on childcare, diapers, wipes, if you plan to formula feed that is extra, plus anything extra you can think about. This way you can see how much you will have to cut back with the extra spending. Good luck!

This is a good plan, at least you have one! There is no good time to have a baby. You’re always going to be “behind” but really you’re not. Budgeting and making sure you two have a solid foundation before ttc is great! I think this awesome. Personally I wish we wouldn’t of waited a year after getting married to ttc, but financially we are in a whole new pay grade. If it works for you and him go for it and hopefully you two can agree on it.

My husband and I waited until we were financially stable, finished with schooling (yes, grad school was involved) and we both had stable careers. That con list that looks so small is actually a major deal. Struggling financially with a newborn or while pregnant, while trying to find a job, is not going to be an easy feat. We worked towards saving a nest egg in case I was out of work for any reason, or our baby wound up with a condition that required extra care/so we could afford childcare in general. We ended up needing IVF, and the extra funds came in handy. I’m a big proponent of having your ducks in a row before adding a child to the mix, because once they’re there, things are going to get much harder and more unbalanced. Finances are one of my top 3 ducks.

Gosh my timeline started back in the beginning of 2019 - we had it all perfectly planned that is until the plan didn’t go to plan. TTC isn’t easy for everyone. 2 years later, we’re finally on what we hope is the journey ❤️ good luck to you, I sincerely hope your timeline works for you.
