Are Acrylics safe for your nails? How much damage would they do?

I was just wondering if I should get acrylics done to my nails? My mom keeps warning me about how they're going to damage my nails because I have such beautiful nails anyway, but recently my nails have been breaking badly and I want to enjoy my time with nails because in the future I'm not going to be able to have long nails because I want to be an OB/GYN. I'm also in a health academy at my high school so in a few months or so, I'm going to have to cut my nails short anyway. Should I get them? Are they worth it? Feel free to comment down below!!
