Small talk or is he interested?

How do I know if a guy I’m talking too is into me or if it’s just small talk and he is just seeing how I’m doing after we have not talked in a year? (He is my ex, we dated for 5 months and didn’t talk for a year).

I can’t tell if he is just seeing how I am doing, or if he wants to actually start talking again. He’s a quiet guy so either way I have to do most of the talking. I’m okay with that, it’s just it’s hard for me to tell what he wants .
