Sperm donation. Lies and Law suits

An

Hello CC I don’t think we have had the privilege to debate over this yet so I wanted to see what you all think.

We all know that fertility clinics and sperm donation is a booming industry of business (let’s face it) but I always wondered about sperm donors and what is required of them beyond just testing and samples.

So apparently Dr. Bryce Cleary made a sperm donation back in the 80’s and was promised that based on rules and regulations that he would be the anonymous donor of no more than 5 children all of whom would be spread out on different coasts.

That is where the lie started. In fact Dr. cleary found out much later that the clinic he used actually used his sample with many families most of which are in the same state and area he lives in and the total was not 5 but 17!

Now for donors they are required to give a sample every week for a years time that is tested and is supposed to not be used for more than 5 families hoping to have children of their own. Since there is no process that requires families to check in for success or failure of these samples the clinics in turn continue to use and sell the samples between the state and can sell them anywhere around the world.

To date there is a sperm donor who has approximately 200 children.

Do you think this is fair and should be allowed if donors are promised and sign paperwork confirming that no more than 5 children will be created and all other samples to be destroyed?

Correction as of February 2021 there are 20 children confirmed to have come from Dr. Cleary’s sample.
