Getting Cervix Checked?

So I am 37 weeks tomorrow and this week I’ve been having mild contractions, along with painful pelvic pain. When the contractions started I contacted my midwives so they’re totally aware and just want me to keep monitoring. So I had an appointment this morning, just my normal check up, and I asked if they would check my cervix to see if i am dialated at all. They said they don’t normally do it until 39 weeks which I already knew but they told me I could request it sooner and I was just curious because I’ve been contracting, I just wanted to know. But my midwife basically refused and wouldn’t check me out. I just felt really defeated and like I wasn’t being listened to.... Has anyone been checked at this point? I know they know what they’re doing and dealing with but I’m a first time mom and just was curious, I wanted a little bit of peace of mind I guess.
