missed period but spotting before period..HELP

1 week before my period I had brown spotting, very light, barely even needed a panty liner went on for about six days before my expected petiod..my period Never came.. so I'm not sure if that was supposed to my period or not.. I took a pregnancy test on the day of my expected period that was negative.. I'm assuming I'm not pregnant but still today is a week later from when my period was supposed to come..Should I expect that brown spotting was my period? any input would help.. Now I'm just confused when I'm supposed to ovulate and when my next period is supposed to come
