Pen-pal?

So I’m planning on doing the pen-pal thing just to get a first hand count of prison culture/life but has anybody ever done this before?

Just be careful. Don’t give any personal info or money. Be aware that you’re already giving this person your address (unless you’re using a P.O. Box which is a good idea). And whatever you do, do not fall in love with anyone.

I’ve never wrote to a random prisoner so I mean idk about that, I would definitely get a PO Box because you don’t want them to have your address. But when my man was in prison I wrote him every single day and beware that there’s a LOT of rules to sending mail to prisoners. The place he was at decided to be assholes and after a few weeks of me sending letters there, I used colored pens all the time, they banned colored ink. You can’t put perfumes or anything on the paper. You can send cards but you can’t have anything that’s glued on or anything that’s really just not flat paper. 
You do have to put your full name on the return address, so I’d be really careful with that. Have your social media protected. It just sounds scary to do that with someone random because when I Google myself the places I’ve lived pop up on random websites. 
Idk after typing all this I just wouldn’t recommend it. Too many risks, not too many positives.

Note that I found out the hard way that it flags your name so if you apply for a job - or anyone else does that lives/lived at your address - that does a Federal background check, they'll see there was inmate contact and the names of the inmates. Sadly, my ex husband was confronted about the inmates I was writing when he applied for a Federal job. So be prepared.
