Ivan Milo is here!

Emily

We welcomed Ivan Milo Sabanilla into the world at 8:31 pm 3/23/2021.

I went into labor early on Monday naturally and was due to be induced on Tuesday. We ended up going in early and got admitted immediately. I was 5 cm dilated by 6 am and had my water broken and things went from manageable to unimaginable pain in seconds. That’s when I accepted the Epidural. When I received the epidural they decided to supplement me with Pitocin to speed up delivery. As time went by I was still progressing and then at 7 cm my epidural failed for the 1st time and I went from not feeling a thing to clinging on to my partner in the mater of seconds.

They bulosed me and the contractions went away. Then at an 8cm my epidural failed twice and I went from being completely numb and happy to being in excruciating pain and yet numb from the hips down. They bulosed me both times and my contractions faded into being numb both times.

Things changed drastically when I hit a 9.5 cm. My epidural failed for the fourth time and my body started to try and push the baby out. My cervix then became swollen in multiple areas and the baby was super low but his poor head was not positioned in a way that would make him deliver naturally. The swelling in my cervix brought me back to a 7 as the baby was moving up instead of down. My doctor let us decide weather to move forward and try to get the swelling in control or have an cesarean and get him out of his discomfort. My midwife came in and checked me and I was devastated to know that the baby had gone high up and was now in a position that was impossible for me to deliver naturally with and her advice was to take the cesarean and we agreed.

They came and preped me and got German Sabanilla into his bunny suit and took me back to the OR. They were going to send German in after I was all prepared and ready to go. The anesthesiologist removed my epidural line because it had failed so many times and gave me a spinal. When they were testing me to see if the spinal had worked they had discovered that it had in fact also not worked. They then let me know that I had to be completely put out so that they could deliver my son.

44 hours of Labor.

4 failed epidurals.

1 failed spinal.

Then I woke up and I was no longer pregnant and I missed the birth of my own son.

Poor German was waiting to go into the OR and then all of a sudden they brought in his baby and I was no where in sight.

When I woke up I could not see through the blur of the anesthesia and they told me that I had my baby. I begged them to bring me to my baby and they kept telling me it would just be a few.

When they brought my back I was crying hysterically and I saw my baby skin to skin with his daddy and I broke down even more.

Both me and German missed the birth of our first baby and he didn’t know if I was even okay for a period of time.

At the end of this grueling process, we have been blessed with the little light at the end of the dark. Our son Ivan has changed us and changed our prospective on life.

We will forever be greatful for this little boy.

Ivan Milo, Mamí and Papí love you more than you will even know. You are our first son and our first thought of every day. We love you papa. Every single second of this pregnancy and your delivery was worth it and I would do it 100 times over.

Ivan Milo Sabanilla. 7 pounds 10 ounces, 19.5 inches long. The love of our life. 💙💙 We didn’t get to see you come into the world and we didn’t get to hear your first cry, but we will be there for the rest of your firsts and cheer you on. We love you 💖💖
