Can someone explain percentile to me??

Like what’s good? What’s bad? What’s average? 
I don’t get it, I’m sorry if I sound stupid 
I’ve had 2 kids already and almost due with 3 but I still get confused when doc says your in thei percentile lmao 
Like for example I’m 32 weeks and get weekly ultrasounds due to high risk and today at 32w baby was weight 4lb8oz 
She said that’s 47th percentile I’m like okayyyy, even tho i don’t get it

My last scan showed my boy in the 62nd percentile, it just means he’s bigger than 62% of other babies at this gestation, he was measuring a couple of days ahead

Percentile is simply saying your baby is x amount bigger than the other babies. So if your baby is in the 47th percentile, he is bigger than 47% of babies at the gestation. 47% is almost exactly average, with average being 50%.

I’ll add to what everyone else is saying that there is no abnormal percentile per se (the outliers can be of a concern as they may indicate issues but not all the time). What would be abnormal is if the baby was consistently following a curve (for eg 60th percentile) and then all of a sudden dipped to 40th. Or if the opposite happens. Those are things that need investigation. But if a baby was always 20th percentile with no apparent medical issues, then it just means baby is on the smaller side.

50 is average. Higher than 50 is above average. Less than 50 is below average. The further you get from 50 the further from average they are.

It’s an average of what baby could weigh and when they’ll be due. For example, at my 16 week scan baby was measuring in the 30th percentile, so below average, but due date remained the same. They base it off the head, abdominal and femur measurements and those combined give you the percentile. Typically anything above 10% and below 90% is considered “normal” but there are so many variances and parameters.

So just a tiny bit below the average. My nephew was an 11 lb baby born at the 99th percentile. My daughter was 6 lb 1 oz born at the 6th percentile. 50% is eight in the middle and average
