dentist question

so I had an abscess in my mouth and it made my face swell, I went to urgent care and got out on antibiotics. it’s now been down for 2 weeks. i’ve called the dentist today and i’m a new patient so they basically told me i’m just getting an x-ray and evaluation.. and I can get a cleaning as well.. I told her the doctors told me to follow up with a dentist bc I may have to get the tooth pulled. she told me since i’m not a existing patient that they will set that up afterward. but I cannot handle the constant pain when I eat.. it’s on both sides as well (not the abscess) but both sides hurt and are very sensitive to cold and hot foods 😩 is this normal for them to do?
