What’s the deal with the mucus plug??

Question

I heard everywhere that you lose your mucus plug before you go into labour but I lost mine at 36+6 weeks and then again at 38 weeksish and now again at 38+6. 
I know it regenerates but why do people say it’s a sign of labour approaching?

I think a lot of people confuse the mucus plug (which you can lose piece of throughout and it does regenerate) with the bloody show. Which is when you lose all your plug. The bloody show means labor is pretty darn close. Usually within a 1-3 days.

Its the bloody show that is a sign or labor not just losing parts of your plug. Bloody show is spotting or blood tinged mucus plug and it’s usually a lot or the whole plug.

With both of mine I lost my plug off and on starting around 20 weeks. The plug regenerates itself it is not a sign of labor the bloody show is a sign of labor
