Fingernail biting

Question

Both my 4 year old and 2 year old started biting their nails and it’s become a habit where my 2 year old will start to bleed. Their nails are cut often so they’re not long at all. I’ve read about that nail polish stuff that tastes bad and makes them stop but was wondering if anyone had some input on it or advice to help them stop.

Try and get to the root of the problem. What are their attitudes like when they start bitting them? Sad, angry, confused? 
Teach them how to better cope and express how they are feeling. Teach them to work through their feelings. 
Give them something as a comfort object. Most people start with as a babies, a binki, stuffed animal, blanket. 
They have to be comfortable in their surrondings. Then just watch and tell them to stop, interact with them. Get them doing something with their hands, play doh, finger painting, make sensatory jars, get a stress ball, they can squeeze.

In my opinion nothing worked for me maybe get him mentally checked out since teeth biting is sign of anxiety and other things

I wish there was a magical cure to nail biting. I’m 34 and still bite my nails, I only stop when I have acrylics on because you can’t bite that without cracking a tooth lol

I’ve been biting my nails sore since I was very young.  It’s a coping mechanism for anxiety, stress, boredom, etc.  I have had times where I was able to stop for years at a time, but it’s typically when my life is going well and I don’t have a lot of stress.  It’s not an easy habit to break.  Usually kids who do this can’t be stopped with just the bitter nail polish.  I would talk to your pediatrician about it.
