How can I support him?

Recently a friend of mine told me his Grandma was in hospital. I know he is close with his grandparents and right now is a really hard time for him. I honestly wish I could give him a hug but I can't because he lives such a long way away from me. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for supporting a friend long distance because I really want to show I care and want to be able to support him.
