How do they do so much without a 3rd trimester ultrasound?

Question

I was told my 20week anatomy scan was my last ultrasound unless something was wrong, but it seems so unsafe to not have one towards the end of pregnancy. 
How do they tell the baby’s weight? Positioning? How do they know if the cord is around their neck? Or if there is low fluid levels? Or a slew of other things? 
Literally, do they just assume all those things are fine? Do you not get to know the baby’s weight estimate without an ultrasound?

They can tell baby’s position just by feeling your belly and usually can tell if fluid levels are off by measuring fundal height. Growth scans really generally aren’t medically necessary. 
I have to get one because I’m measuring small. I’d much rather she be measuring right and not need one.

A lot of it is by feel. My doctor said she can tell by feel about fluid levels. 
and the cord is likely to slip on and off the neck multiple times while they are in womb. It becomes a concern during delivery because it can become tight as the leave the birth canal. Weigh goes off your weigh, besides, ultrasounds aren’t accurate the further along you get anyways. It’s all normal.

Women have given birth for thousands of years with no ultrasounds. I think we’ll be fine

I’ve had a few after 20 weeks. It’s not standard practice for every OB to stop doing them.. I think it would drive me crazy not to see my little babe after that!

They check your urine, blood pressure, weight, belly measurements, and baby’s heart beat at every appointment. If anything seems off or you report something concerning (like less movement for example) they do other tests. I went in for a non stress test for decreased fetal movement at 34 weeks. Baby was fine. Doctor asked for an ultrasound last week at 37 weeks because I haven’t been gaining weight. Baby is fine. They are cautious of this and request tests when necessary. But ultrasounds at the end of pregnancy are notoriously inaccurate. As long as you are feeling movement and things are good at your appointments, the baby is likely fine.
