MY BOSS IS PLAYING ME!! i feel used and don't know how to handle it
I'm so frustrated typing this. To make it long story short I'm a recent college grad and after several months, I was able to finally get a job in my degree. When I first applied for the position, i was told on the day of the interview that i would be a PAID intern instead so that my boss can see how I progress in her company. In the interview my boss asked me how much I would want to get paid after I agreed on the internship position and we agreed on a number even though it was below minimum wage. Well after a month and some change of interning I am just finding out its not a paid position at all. She has made slick comments chuckling and saying "you're not getting paid, right" and it would go over my head because she has an accent and I wouldn't really understand her due to her having an accent. Well today I understood when she made that same slick comment. She left me at the company so she could leave early and i was too taken aback shocked to say anything. Mind you I've been working for her for a month and some change. I originally worked from 10am-5pm and she suddenly changed the hours a few weeks ago from only me coming in from 9:15am-5:30pm even though website hours say 9am-5pm and her excuse for me having to come in early is because she wants me to take any phone calls that come in (literally no one calls in between 9:15-10am). I don't know what to do. I feel used by her. This is a small couple-owned business so it's literally me and her that are mostly in the office and her cousin who comes in once every few weeks. At this point I feel like my time has been wasted even though I have learned a lot but im not a college student working for hours im at an age where I need to make money so I can save up in order to move out from my parents house.
UPDATE:
I have left and while most people said that since there's no contract there's nothing I can do but I definitely did something/ still am. It's been a long process but I have taken legal action on this matter. Thankfully, the state I live in doesn't allow this type of bs so now my boss owes me the missing wages plus DOUBLE. Whether we had a verbal contract, physical contract or whether I told my boss that I was gonna work for free, my state says "hell no, pay her cause shit isn't free." Now it's just a waiting game for me. I turned in my evidence of working there and I've just been waiting to hear back about my money. I definitely learned a lot from this process. I learned that I need to have paper proof and not be too excited that I overlook important things and I learned how evil people are. Even with my evidence my boss was still lying the whole time and I'm glad a third party was able to hear her bs too. I know my boss wasn't expecting this since im a quiet person but I'm karma and she needed to meet me for a lesson. I hope she learns that she needs to treat people with respect who are helping her business.
