I want to give my husband’s dog away

I know. I sound like an absolute monster. But let me explain.

I’ve been with my husband for 11 years (married for 3). About a year into our relationship, he adopted a puppy. Since he lived at home during that time, the puppy sort of became the family dog and like his mom’s 4th son. Her and the dog are so bonded! It’s very sweet.

When we started living together, he’d bring the dog over to our place a few days out of the week then drop him back off at his mom’s because she’d ask to spend time with him. This dog was basically a shared pet at this point and was really loved on! This went on for years.

When the the pandemic started, the dog became a permanent resident of our house since we work from home now. My MIL comes to visit him once in a while but he permanently stays here. Mind you, I was not given a say in this decision…it kind of just happened. But I was never opposed to it either so it’s whatever.

While the dog is an angel with us and my MIL, he’s aggressive with visitors and has tried to bite people. We went to behavioral classes, have done 1:1 training, but nothing seems to help. It’s extremely stressful and I feel like we’ve had to sacrifice a lot because of his aggression.

We have a baby on the way and I fully intend to have my family visit and spend time with the baby. But I really don’t see that happening (peacefully) with the dog here.

I’d like to talk to my husband and MIL about him permanently living with her again.

This will absolutely break my husband’s heart. He and that dog are so attached and to be honest, he accuses me of seeing “too many flaws” in the dog whereas I think he’s blind to his aggressive tendencies and how dangerous it could be when more people are in our home.

I’m feeling really stressed out about this and am wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation. Or if anyone has any recommendations on how to handle this other than asking my MIL to take him?
