Expectation to Tip?

NeefaFeefa

Is this a U.S. only thing?

Does anyone else feel like today’s “Tipping” expectation in the U.S. is getting completely out of hand?

Why do we have to feel pressured to tip nearly everyone?

I’m not counting restaurant servers, as I am aware that tips are accounted for as part of their wages, therefore their base pay is lower.

I mean, when I pick up a pizza (not delivery)?

When I go to Starbucks? Those employees make more than I ever did.

When I get a donut at the local shop, where the only way they served me was to put it in a box (once again, they make more than I did working retail, and these kids didn’t even bake the donuts) .

When I get my hair done? $250 for a service that takes 4 hours is still equivalent to $62/hour and THEN it’s considered polite to tip 20%?

When grooming my dog costs $150 for two hours of work?

All of the things.

Meanwhile, I have worked in multiple retail chains that emphasized customer service as a PRIORITY. I worked my ass off stocking shelves, spending 30 minutes helping customers find the right products, carrying heavy items out to their cars, etc. And yet people in retail are expected to be happy with their oftentimes minimum wage jobs. No tips allowed/expected.

I get that tipping is a way to show someone that you appreciated their time/attention/service. But why does it seem like EVERYONE these days expects tips?

Probably makes me sound like an asshole, but I don’t get it. If employees deserve more money then the employer should be paying more, not expecting paying customers to have to make up the slack.
