I like kinbaku / shibari (Japanese bondage). They make gorgeous patterns and if the rope is long enough can be manipulated to tie you down / into an uncomfortable pose. 
You can also make safe loops around your neck that can be manually tightened to choke, but upon release become slack again.

A good place to start is bondage tape, it's cheap, it sticks to itself but not skin so it's not painful to remove, and it looks kinky as hell. You can also get silky ropes at sex stores and books with different ways to tie someone up, but that's pretty intimidating. Handcuffs are good but make sure to get fluffy ones, the hard ones can hurt! Have you thought about getting a harness of some kind? There's a lot of different types:
