Not sure if this is a dumb question or not but I was wondering if private ultrasounds are safe? I’ve been going only to my OBs office but really wanted to do an early gender scan privately and I’m not sure if it’s something my doctor would advice me against.

I don't think there's enough evidence to say it's not safe, but also not enough evidence to say it is safe so it's your personal choice. There are women who are high risk who end up having weekly or 2 weekly scans towards the end, and they wouldn't do that if it was a higher risk to the baby than not having a scan so one extra should be ok.
I've had 2 scheduled (done at 15w and 22w because I didn't book the 12 and 20w scans in time 😂) and then an additional 2 emergency scans at 6w and 16w and I've been fine. I'm considering getting a 4D done around 32w as well 🥰

It’s up to you. Since ultrasounds are not considered 100% risk-free and more information is being gathered on the potential risks, most practitioners are moving away from frequent ultrasounds and will only do 1-2 for the whole pregnancy. My midwife typically only does the 20 week anatomy scan unless there’s a valid reason to do another. 
I didn’t do any private scans, I had the NIPT to find out the sex of the baby early and confirmed it at our anatomy scan. I don’t plan to have another ultrasound unless my midwife deems it necessary for the remainder of my pregnancy.

I've done them twice with both of my pregnancies. I did an early gender scan and then a 4D ultrasound a few weeks later. They are safe, and honestly I loved it because the place I went to was just more relaxed, not rushed, and welcoming. Not to mention, the guy I went to actually worked for the hospital too, and local doctors office, and so he was able to give me information my doctors didn't give me and explain things more in depth.

I’m 10 weeks and I’ve had a scan every week for the last 4 weeks due to being very high risk. I don’t see how it could be worse than that! 🙊
