fetal doppler - yay or nay?

Question

I’m almost 13 weeks and my aunt thought it would be fun to try to find the baby’s heartbeat on the doppler and when we couldn’t find it i panicked even though we had an ultrasound yesterday of the baby moving and heard the heartbeat. I told my husband i don’t want to use that again bc then it would just make me go to the er thinking somethings wrong if i can’t find the heartbeat. What do all you beautiful women think? :)

It can be hard to find the heartbeat with the at-home dopplers. That’s why they’re not recommended to be used at all until at least the second trimester and even then, it may still be difficult for you to find it because you’re not trained. If you decide to use it again, just remember that some days you may find it, other days you may not and it’s normal. I’m 16 weeks and have one and I still have a hard time most days finding it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As a generally anxious person I loved mine for my first pregnancy and plan to use it this time around, But I only started using it after my first obgyn appt when they found the heartbeat on theirs so I knew where to look, and my sons heartbeat really didn’t move out of that general area my entire pregnancy haha. But I can totally see how it can cause stress not to be able to find a heartbeat!

Don’t get it if you’ll get stressed when you don’t find it.  Even my midwife struggled to find my son on occasion through the beginning of second trimester.  
I have used one the last two pregnancies though with no issues.  It’s also my third and fourth babies though so I’m kind of old hat to it

I agree. There is a part of me that wants one for my next pregnancy as I just had a missed miscarriage earlier this month but then again I think it would make me go to the ER allllllll the time.

I have one and have had practice with my first pregnancy! I wasn’t able to find it up until 10 weeks with this one. It for sure takes patience and sometimes I can’t find it still. I for sure wouldn’t use it if it worried you! ♥️

YouTube videos helped me a lot!! Start right at the pubic bone where your underwear usually rests, go up just a little and usually to the left. Baby is still down low right now and tiny. Hope this helps!

I’m 24 weeks and am just now able to find the heartbeat every time/easily. My OB suggested I get one for peace of mind but you need to be able to not freak out if you can’t find it. Baby is still so tiny at that stage and the home dopplers are a lot weaker than the ones at the doctors office. I would hold off on relying on it until you’re farther along and it’s easier to pick up just so you don’t worry yourself

it takes a while to figure out how to use!! once you figure it out its amazing but i think it starts to work better once your around 18 weeks
