Tricare help 😭

Courtney

So I just got married last year and my husband is In the Army National Guard. He did not have tricare before we got married because he doesn’t think he will get sick (I know it’s dumb trust me) I was on my dads insurance and just turned 26. I got pregnant in February and have still been on parents insurance but I officially lose coverage tomorrow August 1st. My husband called to set up tricare yesterday and they got it activated but I called them just to make sure my OB was covered because it’s too late to switch since I’m 27 weeks. They said my doctor is not covered but the office is??? That makes literally no sense. I’m high risk and have too many issues to completely start over with a new doctor but we can’t afford to pay the out of network. The billing specialist at the OB said they have plenty of patients who have Tricare select and it’s fine, but now I’m panicking and wondering if I am gonna have to try to find a new doctor.

Call Tricare & have them assign you a Primary Care doctor. Call that doctor & ask for them to refer you to your current OB as you do not wish to switch doctors this late. Once the referral is processed, you should be all good to go. I had to do it for my last pregnancy. ☺️ To clarify the question regarding the clinic being covered but not the doctor, it happens all the time. There are a ton of reasons why but basically you need to call and verify that all your doctors are covered by your insurance policy. If you have tricare prime, you’re going to see military doctors almost exclusively from this point on!

We have Tricare select! I don’t think we need a referral but I don’t have time to get one 😭 I have gestational diabetes and need to go to my doctors appointments next week. The nearest Army hospital is 40 minutes from our house too 🙄

I called my doctor and they reassured me that she was actually in network and it was fine and the most i would owe is 20%. My son was born last month and I haven’t seen a single bill yet but I know they’re coming. You can try looking for a doctor on the Tricare app!

If you don't mind, any updated on how this went? I'm having a hard time finding doctors in network in our area and don't want to pay everything our of pocket for out of network. Tricare is so unhelpful when we call and when I call the billing department at my doctors office they just refer me back to tricare 😭

Have had tricare select for since we got married. With select you do not need referrals. I have to say the customer service number has been very unhelpful when I’ve called. I’ve kind of had to just look up stuff myself.

I know this is a a few weeks old. With tricare select you do not need a referral, just make sure the facility is within network (look on tricare website). Also, you don't have to go to the hospital on base, it's can be off base with select.
