thoughts on hyphenated last names?

due in less then 3 weeks & still have yet to decide her last name situation 😩 I want her to have my last name but i know how upset the fathers family would be. Her father isn’t active in her life but his family has always been so welcoming and supportive. I’ve known them for years , been on vacations with them, they’ve bought me soo much to prepare for the baby and i feel like it would really hurt them and my relationship with them if i have her only my last name.. i don’t know what to do

If he’s not an active part, I wouldn’t give her his name. Maybe a meaningful middle name from their side?

Last names are linked to identity. 
Your child will not identify with its father, but with you. 
I've heard from a few a people who didn't have the same last names as the parent who raised them and they said that in someway they felt like they didn't belong.

I have had a hyphenated name my whole life, first both my parents for my maiden name then my fathers and husbands as a married woman. I’m all for hyphenation to include everyone BUT you shouldn’t feel obligated to do it because they would be upset.

Both of my kids have hyphenated last names, I’ve been with their father for 8 years. If we get married they can have his last name

I like my name Sarah-Jayne but people also use Sarah even when I directly tell them my name. I drives me nuts! I find myself correcting people all the time. Still with it and INSIST schools etc use it!!!!!

My husband HATES his hyphenated name. I wouldn’t do it.
