Too early to test?

Hi everyone! I’m new to trying to conceive and feel completely lost. I stopped the pill in late May and am still learning my cycle. I got a period on 6/9 and then another one on 7/16. I have yet to receive another period and feel like it’s past due but I don’t have much data to go on. I’ve been having unprotected sex during this time so it’s possible I’m pregnant but I took a test on 8/21 that was a strong negative. Should I wait another week to take another? I feel like if it was positive it would show by now but I’m also not sure how long my cycle is. Any suggestions or advice would be great!
