Gender blood test?

Question

I keep hearing all these moms saying they found out the gender as early as 10 weeks because of a blood test. I asked my doctor and lab tec at my first blood draw, and they had never heard of it. Can anyone help me out here? I'm 12+1 and really want to know the gender before Christmas!!

I did mine at 12 weeks and thankfully everything came back normal. Just found out I'm having a boy!!! Two more weeks until I get to see his newest ultra sound. 😃

The test uses "free fetal DNA" extracted from the mothers blood. It is genetic testing used early on in pregnancy to determine risk for trisomy disorders. Genetic testing looks at DNA for the trisomies so as a result, they're able to tell if you're XY(boy) or XX(girl). It is not an estimate or "more likely to have" thing. If it's XX...it is a girl genetically, no probably or more likely about it. Same for XY and boy.

The main objective of the testing is not for gender. It is for genetic screening of trisomy disorders. Most insurances don't cover it unless you're high risk but some people just opt to pay out of pocket.

I did Harmony (company that does DNA screen) and the cash patient price direct from them is $795. There are other companies as well.

With my genectics testing they did measurements during the ultrasound and a protein screen with my blood. If they had come back showing I had risk factors, then they would administer another blood test that scans DNA and I would have been able to find out the sex. The genectics counselor said it was a "double edged sword". You can find out, but only if you have risk factors. I wanted to find out, but happier that all my risk factors were super low. Im sure this all varies from OB to OB.

NIPT by Progenity. My insurance covered some, but my cost was $100. It's a more accurate test than the usual one you get around 16 weeks . It's has a 99% rate of detecting Down syndrome, turners, and other chromosome abnormalities. Whereas the standard one is a 95% accuracy rate with lots of false positives. Gender is the bonus with this test, as we were mostly concerned with a healthy baby. I got it done at 10 weeks and a few days, got the results 6 days later.

Most insurance companies won't cover it unless you are at risk for something or over the age of 35. We had ours done, waiting for results, we had to pay 150$ for it.

I'm a cash pay patient so I opted for the progenity verifi. It cost a pretty penny as I am not high risk and only 22. But completely worth it to know my baby is not at high risk for trisomy 13, 18, or 21. When they study the labs they also check for chromosomal disorders which gives them the ability to see if there are Y chromosomes in your blood which would show there is a boy. If there is XX then you're more likely to have a girl. Of course nothing is 100% but mine came back with male chromosomes after 1 week and I was tested at 12w4d. There are also panorama test, harmony, and maternity 21. Hope this helps!

It's a genetic testing that also gives you an option for gender. The one I did was called Harmony. It tests for down syndrome and trisomy.
