Stolen land?!?

Question

Now I know I've seen a few of the users on glow say we live on stolen land. Back hundreds of years and thousands of years this is what men did they went to wars fighting for new land. Killed people burned down towns/villages/homes, raped, murdered, and tortured. This wasn't just the American settlers. Alexandrea the great, Egyptian pharohs, natives, Vikings, Hitler the list goes on and on. Now I'm not at all saying it's okay because it's not! Almost every inch of livable land in this world was stolen/faught for at one point. Maybe because America before Hitler was the most recent of stolen land people bring it up like it just happened yesterday! People that are alive and live in the U.S. Today did not steal the land! Everyone all over the world could say we live on stolen land because at some point in history it most likely was.

Well yeah, it's all stolen at some point globally. This generation didn't have slaves either, yet some are still treated like it. Matter of fact there used to be an elderly black woman down our road who hated me, a seven year old when she died, because *apparently* my ancestors "owned" hers. I also happen to live in Choctaw territory and the native half doesn't seem to get along with anyone else, poc or not. Then again the Chickasaw to the north seem very friendly.

All you can do is be nice to people and hopefully they'll return the favor. The past is over, but people hold grudges or unfortunately pass those negative feelings down their line. And no, stealing is never been nor ever will be good, but again it all happened. So just don't repeat the past.

Yes, but where in Canada where I live, the Indiginous people are STILL struggling to bounce back from that. So many live in poverty or with addiction issues because there is a cycle of abuse in their families caused by the abuse their ancestors faced in residential schools. Spend some time on a native reserve here, it's not pleasant.

It's a lot more fucked up than the Romans conquering everything over a thousand years ago.

The largest gernocide in world history occurred on American soil. The thing is, the injustice is still going on. Did you know that many reservations still have houses with dirt floors and no indoor plumbing? Sure, the people alive today are not the ones who committed these vicious acts, but while over 50% of native Americans are still living way below the poverty line, this problem is far from fixed.

See I get you, but then main white culture pushes native Americans to either assimilate or move out in the crapiest places to live that are just piled high with people for the small amount of space and has crappy schools and such. Maybe if the original inhabitants of this land got a nice and equally valuable plot of land it may be good, but instead they're all herded into the reservation areas.

I've never had a Native American be angry at me because "I've stolen their land". However, I have seen many disappointed with the way they live and sad to see their traditions die out since in order to live a "decent life" by today's standards they'd have to leave the Rez. At least that's how it is where I live.

I'm not going to apologize for something that I was not even alive to bear witness to. We wouldn't be where we are today without the past. People have conquered lands, slaughtered millions, enslaved hundreds of thousands as "spoils of war," for thousands of years. And, sorry, but I don't see the Cherokee complaining as they sit behind their millions in casino royalties.

the europeans won. they got exactly what they wanted. the biggest languages in the world (french, english, spanish) came from these TINY european countries doing insanely large, crazy, conquering things. they won. it was a terrible tragedy but they got what they set out to and that's incredible.

it's a problem because white people came to America , claimed it as their own and forced the rightful owners to live on the worst possible parts of that land and then gave them guidelines on what they had to do to live on their own land

You don't need to feel guilty about stolen land, but it's always good to acknowledge that present-day injustices (and privileges) have roots in the past, and no major conflict arises from nothing.

Saying that we live on stolen land is often just a reminder that all people have violent histories - not just whichever race/religious/nationality is currently being demonized.
