Can I ask about his dead dad?

I've been talking/kinda seeing this guy since about July now and we hang out almost all the time. His Dad passed away when he was super little, like 3 I think. Anyways he's 27 now and he jokes about his dad dying all the time but he's never said how he died or really much at all about his dad besides the jokes. Its none of my business but I'm just curious what happened to his Dad. Should I ask how he died or just leave it alone until he's ready to tell me? If I do ask, how do I go about it?

I personally didn’t ask my husband how his parents died, I let him talk to me on his own. He opened up when we were together for about 6 months and he felt safe with me to tell me.

My dad died when I was a young kid and I sometimes make jokes about it. But am SUPER open and don't mind at all when people ask! I don't usually announce it (jokes aside) cause it often makes other people more uncomfortable than it does me. They get all "omg I'm so sorry" and dampens the mood. But I'm like dude, it was  26 years ago now. I'm cool! Ask anything you want!

Also,  a lot of people would rather be asked because we feel strange just bringing up a heavy subject.  If we're asked then we know we're not making things uncomfortable for the other person.

My husband’s dad died long before we got together (over 3 years ago) and I know it’s a touchy subject to I don’t bring it up at all and listen when he wants to talk about it.

Maybe it’s just how he copes with his fathers death. Honestly I just say, “if you don’t mind me asking, how did your father pass away. If you don’t want to talk about it that’s completely okay, I was just curious.”

My dad died only almost 3 years ago and I really wouldn't mind being asked about it.  Just let him know he doesn't need to talk about if he doesn't want to. Technically he's the one who brings it up a lot. Maybe he wants to talk about it.

Hey so I lost my dad when I was 11 to cancer, if your interested just ask but remind him that he doesn’t have to answer. Grief is lot of ups and downs so he could be having a hard time at a time you ask. So just making sure he knows it’s okay to not answer.
