Paraguard (copper) IUD Experience

Sharing my great & less-than-great IUD experience for context so y'all can decide for yourselves:

I'm 39, married 15yrs, with the same guy for 17, & had an IUD placed since we decided to be together (22yo). Never considered or explored other birth control options bc I'd forget to take pills to save my own hiney, & I'm ultra sensitive to a lot of meds.

My first was easy peasy, I just remember that it had to be replaced earlier than the 10yrs it could go for (at the 7th year mark) bc it was found to be sitting low on my uterus or something to that effect on a check-up. The procedure was a quick swap & went well.

So anywho, 2nd device, zero side effects, & both my husband & I have been very happy with how effective my IUDs have been.

Anywho, it's the 10th year of that 2nd device & I'm actually due for a replacement. My current gyno & I were both expecting a hassle-free outpatient procedure since this will be my 3rd device. The IUD came out just fine but then my gyno realized that one of its "arms" was missing.

An ultrasound was done & this missing "arm" was located happily camping out up in my uterus looking like it's been there for a bit, & unfortunately, it'd take a minor surgery to sort it out.

I haven't had the surgery yet, & tbh I'm anxious abt going under bc I've never had general anesthesia in my entire life, but it is what it is, I can't just opt to leave something embedded in my uterine wall forever.

But no matter this set back, I'd have the same type IUD placed again after that stray piece is removed. It's what's worked for me all these years, the chances of the device breaking off, etc. is really low & I only happen to be in the unfortunate minority, & my gyno is on board with the plan.

There is no perfect device or medication anyway - so take what you're able from these "reviews" but still make your own informed decision using vetted resources & in partnership with your healthcare provider/s. Hope this helps & happy decision-making! :)
