Periods and iud

I've always had heavy periods that lasted longer than a week so I thought I'd try an iud cause the depo shot was great no periods and light spotting but it was making me gain weight I thought the iud would make your period stop but it's only made it lighter I don't have to wear supers any more I can get away with wearing regulars or lights now, so I'm wondering will my period ever go away I've had it since April 2015
