15 month old not walking independently ?

Question

Hes always pulling up to stand and walking while holding onto something, but he seems afraid to let go and walk on his own
How can i encourage this?
Also is he supposed to be talking right now too? He mostly babbles, sometimes “baba” and “dada”
He still also needs to be rocked to sleep. Unless hes
SUPER sleepy and i put him down he will sleep on his own
I feel like such a failure as a first time single mom:(

I had the same situation my son walked at 15 months & didn’t start talking  until he was almost 2.5 but we ended up putting him in OT & speech at 2 now he’s almost 3.5 & he is a talker & notices everything & he communicates well not only in English but Spanish too so hang in there you got this!

We have been in speech, occupational (since quit), and physical therapy since my son was 9 months old. The key things to do to encourage speech is to talk. Talk talk talk. If you feel you’ve talked enough? You haven’t. Talk some more. Read a lot. You don’t have to read the entire book, just key words and really pronounce the first letter. B-b-ball. C-c-cat. My son is almost 15 months and not walking yet. Encourage baby to strengthen their core. The way they do that? Climb. Lots of climbing. Go to parks. Throw pillows or stuffed animals on the ground that baby will have to climb over. Also, I know this will help, I have to stop carrying him everywhere. It’s becoming a crutch for him. An excuse for him to not walk.

Im a pediatric PT and I don’t get concerned until a child is 18 months and not walking. It sounds like your little one is almost ready. My kids didn’t walk until 13, 14 and 14 months. I wouldn’t worry quite yet because they make so many gains so quickly at this age! Trust your gut…if something doesn’t feel right then you can always talk to your pediatrician about it since they know your child’s health and development pretty well. You are doing great mama!

Sometimes how much you coddle and do for them affects their desire for independence. My husband has a 3 year old from a previous marriage and her grandmother just coddles her every which way. It makes us teaching her how to get dressed and do her shoes SOOOO difficult because her grandmother always does it for her…we run into it with her eating sometimes too. Because again, her grandmother will just pick up the utensil and start feeding her so she will eat. 
I know these are examples of an older kid, but the psychology is still roughly the same. I know it’s super hard as a first time mom, but work on fostering that independence. Praise them when they succeed and praise them when they fail. That way they know it’s ok and to keep trying! 
I hope this helped even just a little bit! I’m currently expecting our first together so I know how I interacted with his daughter may be slightly different than our own, but I’m going to try to keep the same ideology I used with his daughter.

You’re FINE!!! My daughter was like this too.  I was just starting to stop rocking her to sleep at 15 months.  Don’t worry about it! She didn’t walk til 17 months. And her doctor told us walking and talking go hand in hand a lot of the time. Once she started walking, her vocab blossomed.  Hang on, he’ll get there!!!
