Does this sound rude to you?

I’m 16 and I obviously do not want children right now. I go to a gynecologist. She told me I have PCOS. She told me there’s a chance I’m infertile but “we don’t want to find that out right now” and laughed about it. To me it seemed rude but I could just be overreacting.

Yes, that’s not only rude, it’s insensitive and not very accurate. I have PCOS (it’s extremely common) and many women with the condition go on to have healthy pregnancies. It does not automatically mean you’re infertile. Most women with PCOS are not infertile, they just don’t ovulate as frequently which can make it more difficult to get pregnant.
And dropping a big bomb on a 16 year old like “hey, you might be infertile but we’re not going to do anything to find out for sure because you’re not currently in a position to have a baby” is totally inappropriate and insensitive to your feelings. Even though you’re not currently trying to get pregnant doesn’t mean they shouldn’t explore your reproductive health and make sure all is well. If you know about it NOW then it won’t be such an issue when/if ever you’re ready to start trying.
Check out the book Cycle Savvy by Toni Weschler. That book is geared towards teens your age and gives you lots of fantastic information about your body and cycles so you can really understand what’s going on. She also talks about conditions like PCOS.

If you were tested for it then you may have it but you can get a 2nd opinion. but she is has no bedside manner to just flat out tell you that your infertile. She doesn’t know that at all. I would fine a new doc.

It's insensitive and inappropriate and sorry it hurt you. Also she is assuming you're infertile. You can't know your true fertility status without trying for a baby, taking medications etc. So focus on just being a teen and when you're older you can review. It's good you have an early diagnosis so you can manage the symptoms and understand how to live with PCOS.

It is common that people think pcos makes them infertile.
As long as you have ovaries, uterus and having sex with a person that can get you pregnant, you can get pregnant. Can be harder, but can get pregnant. So never listen to the "infertile" story. Get on birth control if you don't want ro be pregnant.
And yes, lauging about it sounds totally rude. I would switch a doctor to one that knows pcos does not equal infertility.

I can see how what she said was upsetting. I think from her perspective maybe she’s used to having to console older women about having PCOS & the fertility struggles that can come with it. If you don’t like her bedside manner, get a new GYN! I did b/c I had a NP laugh at me for having a “lopsided uterus” (mine simply sits more to the left than midline- not a big deal or that uncommon) at the same age when she did my 1st ever pelvic exam. I was mortified. Funny story, I ended up working with her later. She didn’t remember me, but I never forgot her- lol. I still don’t care for her bedside manner.😆
