Have you taken back someone who’s emotionally abusive?

Have you ever taken back someone that was once emotionally abusive? It’s been awhile and my ex seeeeeeems to have been doing well with improving. I’m still unsure if I want to give him another chance, but I miss him so much. For awhile he was drinking a lot and addicted to adderall, so I’m sure that’s what caused the emotional abuse to be worse. He then got fired from his job and I left him. We’ve hung out fairly frequently and he’s been sober and pretty nice. Idk what to do or if I should trust it. I feel like a mess. Has anyone taken someone back who was abusive? Did they change or stick to their word?
