NIPT?

Question

Those of you who are 35+ or father of the baby are 35+ did you get/would you recommend NIPT tests? My husband is 37 and we are pregnant with our second. My OB asked 3 times if we wanted the test done but would not give a straight answer on if we really needed it but got to thinking his age may be why he is doing that? What do you guys think?

I think you should do it, it’s just a blood test it doesn’t hurt the baby & it informs you ahead of time for certain types of conditions like Down syndrome

I’m 39 and had it done as well. Like the precious poster said, it’s a blood draw from you. It doesn’t effect the baby at all. The results took about a week to come back, and while the results wouldn’t have changed our decision, it was nice to know all the ranges were normal!

35 years old and had it done with this pregnancy. It’s non-invasive so there is no risk to having it done. It wasn’t even brought up as an option when I was pregnant with my first (30y ears).

Partners age shouldn’t make an impact at all. I didn’t do it with my first 2 pregnancies (I was 33, husband 35 with my first and I was 34, husband 36 with my 2nd). Didn’t do it originally with this 3rd pregnancy (I’m 36 and hubby 38) but my anatomy scan showed an EIF which is a soft marketer for Down syndrome so I ended up doing the nipt at like 21 weeks. Luckily all came back low risk. 
For me I never wanted to do it because the outcome wouldn’t change anything for me, I knew I wouldn’t want to do further testing as that could be risky for baby/miscarriage and so if I had gotten positive results it would have caused so much more anxiety throughout the pregnancy. Plus I think there’s a lot of false positives. Just wasn’t worth it for me.
But others feel they would want to know as it may change the outcome of their pregnancy OR it just helps them prepare for when baby arrives

All points raised by the other comments are valid I would just add that NIPT is a very expensive test. I have just received the bill for almost 1K, even with my insurance paying more than 50% so it is something to check to support your decision.

The NIPT is only going to test your blood and potential genetic factors you carry. It might add unnecessary stress because it could say you are increased risk of passing on genetic disorders like Down syndrome. If you are a positive carrier, they would want to test your husband’s blood to see if he’s a carrier. Then they could want to do an amniocentesis to test baby. When in reality if the baby has a genetic condition, it will likely show up on your anatomy scan. Or once the baby is born, they can then address the need for further testing. So I say go with the decision you and your husband decide! Pro: It might be helpful to know ahead of time and get further testing to prepare you mentally. Con: the only definitive test to prove a child has a genetic condition is going to be a blood test from baby once he or she is born. So it can add extra stress to the pregnancy. Whatever you decide to do, it will be the right choice.

I had it down with both my babies and I was 29 & 31. My husband was 31, 34. We did the blood test, it’s safe and not a big deal regardless we would keep our baby regardless of the outcome but it’s so your aware of the possibility, and I say possibly cause iv read of stories where the parents do get told something came back positive and when baby is born is was a false alarm. Just food for thought, best wishes mama!

I am 27, this is my second time having the NIPT done to test if the baby is ok. And I like the piece of mind and knowing ahead combined with the scan, and further testing available if there are abnormalities detected.

Im 36 and did both the NT and NIPT. Both came out normal. I chose the Panorama for the NIPT which my doctor said is the one with the highest accuracy. Also because I wanted to know the gender early.
