What does it mean

I remember I was walking my toddler to school and the best thing an old man with a dog said to me was "don't deny them their own personality" when we was talking about kids in general, what did he mean by this? I think I understand but I'm not sure, what do you think this means?

Let them be who they are and not try to fit them into the cookie cutter society/social media pushes on childhood would be my interpretation.

Sometimes parenting and the school system and really society in general tries to force kids into a box. Parents have predisposed ideas of how their children should act, think, and what they should do. Also everyone has different ideas about discipline but sometimes different types of discipline can suppress the kids personality. Some people just want their kids to be quiet and get in line, when really it’s OK if they play and they are silly and act up a little bit. I think you can discipline the personality out of kids if it’s authoritarian style parenting.￼

My interpretation of it was basically "allow them to be who they are" 
A lot of parents find themselves wanting a certain life for their kids .... which IS completely understandable . But with that comes expectations of course . Some parents have expectations for their kids as soon as they're born . Parents expect their kids to act a certain way , do certain things , eat certain things , say certain things ... etc . 
Oftentimes the child doesn't end up being who the parent "expected" them to be . The child may try their hardest to do so because of course they want to make their parents proud , but in some cases the child ends up unhappy in the long run because their parent's "expected" image of them was never who they really are or wanted to be . In the parents eyes , it's like the kids "let them down" in a way & the kids may get scolded for it ... but that may not be the case .
The case is ... the parents had the child on this pedestal of THEIR expectation of who THEY wanted the child to be in their eyes , but in reality , the parents maybe never thought about who the CHILD wanted to be for themselves .
Maybe I thought too deep into it but that's my interpretation lol

Oh my gosh I want to print that quote and keep it in my home that’s very sweet ❤️ I agree. I think it was him just saying make sure to see them grow into themselves rather than guide them into someone society/ the parents expectations want. I heard something similar once that has always stuck with me! “A parents job is to create a safe space for their child to grow. Not to dictate their growth” love love love it.
