How to get more milk??

Question

I've never nursed cause my son wouldn't latch on so I would pump and feed him the milk but I wouldn't pump at night and after a couple of weeks now I only get a very little amount of milk when I pump like 2-3 ounces after 20 mins of pumping, and now my son will latch on but he just spits my boob out after a min because he isn't getting enough milk... Is there anyway for me to increase my milk production and get it back to the way it was before or am i already "dried up" at this point.. Any advice is greatly appreciated I would love to be able to actually breast feed now since my son will latch ( and has a very strong suck.

I would say to pump every two to three host hours even at night. If you're still producing milk then you haven't dried up. Don't give up! Maybe even call your local lactation consultant. They can give you lots of tips!

Don't stress momma. 1.5-2oz both breasts combined is actually average pump output, and baby only needs 1-1.5 oz an hour. Also, pumping isn't an indicator of supply as pumping is nowhere near as efficient as baby at removing milk from your breasts. The only way (besides a weighted feeding) to really tell if baby is getting enough is whether or not baby is having enough wet and dirty diapers each day. Be careful with fenugreek because it affects people differently, and sometimes causes a drop in supply rather than helping. Drinking Gatorade and smart water has helped me a lot since they have electrolytes. Other foods that boost supply are oatmeal, flax seed, and Brewers yeast (check out a recipe for lactation cookies). I take 6 610mg fenugreek capsules a day as instructed by my doctor for healthy milk supply 2 at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I wake up an hour early before baby and pump first thing I get a little over 6oz (with both breasts) he wakes up and eats about another 30 minutes later. Then maybe every couple hours. Once he goes down for his long nap (between 1:30 and 6:00) I pump twice. My milk supply is fairly good I think, he's never had to have formula is gaining plenty of weight :) but the fenugreek

Does your child's PCP have a lactation nurse that you can meet with? Do they have a lactation support group. If not they should know of some within the community. Another resource might be the lactation group at the hospital where you delivered at. Make sure your baby has a good latch.  I was told to breast-feed every 2 to 3 hours, 10 minutes on each side for a total of 40 minutes (right side, left side, right side, left side). Then pump for 10 - 15 minutes after.  Also try Mother's Milk Tea, Lactation Cookies, and Fenugreek capsules 2-3 capsules 3x day.  Make sure you were eating enough food. Anything high in protein is good like oatmeal or protein shakes.

I've been pumping because my son has a breathing issue that gets worse when he lays on his side to nurse. You will need to pump every 2 to 3 hours even at night. This will tell your brain that you need to produce more. Also if you are starting to breastfeed then feed your son and pump after he is done feeding so your body will get the signal that you need to produce more milk. I've been eating lactation cookies that seem to be helping. My production is low on my left side because I developed mastitis on that side and I've been trying to get it back up ever since. It's a lot of work but if it something you want it is worth it!
