Saying no when you really mean yes but being sensitive to his pockets

I have a problem worrying about other people problem and not what I want my so and I been together going on two years he has never bought me anything but I did for him and we got into an argument once for it. But recently he told me his Insurance for his car got dropped and he has to get tags well after that I went to see him and he asked me what I wanted for Christmas thinking of the things he said I said nothing he immediately laughed and said well I want something then said never mind cause I know you have your kids. He said he has to get his Sister something cause he know she getting him something .Question should I feel some type of way if he doesn't get me anything or I just put my foot in my mouth.
