Best gap is what fits your life best.
For me, best is/was less than 3 years. Basically 2. Because I had a parental leave, that was payed for 1.5 years, and up to 3 unpayed per child. I personally didn't want to go back to work for a year or two in between, because I am a teacher and I know it is better to not change math teachers in one grade too often. So in my case the best gap was max 3 years.
My second son will be born a month before first turns two. Then we will discuss with husband the possibility of third, this time I most likely will go back to work for at least 2-3 years just because we want to leave a longer gap next time, so that I could do some real work besides taking care of babies...

my girls have 16m in between them! if anything I'd wait a few more months but I like having them close together. planned for a 2yr age difference, just luckily conceived faster than expected
