Speak english or deal with it?

So i got to meet my boyfriend's family and his friend for the first time. They all speak English like I do. But my native language and their is different. Ive been taught in my house that if there is a foreigner, we should always speak language everyone speaks because it's polite. However I've spent the whole day just listening to the foreign language and no one really caring I don't understand anything. They would just stop at random spot with a car and i need to guess what we are about to do. No one really talks with me either. I am learning their language for only 2 months (we've been together for 7) so I cant exactly comunicate in it. I just feel like an Idiot and wonder why was i even invited.

He should be translating or communicating with you about the plans and the general idea of the conversation.

I don’t know another language so I wouldn’t be much help. He should be trying if he invited you but I also understand them not switching to your language.

for me personally, I'd say deal with it.  but I do prefer people to speak their own languages, I pickup on languages pretty easily so it's a matter of hours or days (worst case scenario,  weeks) for me to understand conversations. It's the best way for me to learn a language, I don't learn anything from a classroom.

My native isn’t english but I make sure I translate everything to
My husband whenever we are around friends and family who don’t speak english.
It’s very easy to switch to your native language….it’s his responsibility to translate and make you feel comfortable

My husbands family speaks another language. His mom & dad are not fluent in English (despite living in Australia for over 30 years). When we lived in Australia it was a constant struggle to communicate with them — and they did not speak English around me.
Thankfully my husband and BIL would translate (when possible) but it was really difficult.  Most of the time I just sat there unable to contribute to the conversation unless they weren’t included.
We moved to England so no longer have to worry about it- but on Facetime I just let my husband speak his native language and say hi whenever i see them.

Did you tell him how you felt? Explain to him that it's uncomfortable for you and maybe he can do something about it
