The first thing we bought was a crib, about two weeks after I found out I was pregnant. We were gifted two infant car seats, a swing, a rocker and a walker by my friends that same month. We did not buy anything else until after the baby shower, at which we had enough clothing to last until about 6 months. Our son was in newborn diapers for almost seven weeks, and we only had to buy one box of that size since we had plenty from the shower. We didn't buy much until after he was born since our big ticket item was the crib. We are about to hire a cloth diaper service to save from buying diapers, well just need wipes. I breastfeed so we don't need formula at this time. I got my breast pump from Edgewood.com two or three months before my son's birth day. I have been buying lanolin and milk storage bags, and for our next baby, will buy these in advance. Also, we use A&D ointment, and bag balm for as a preventative for diaper chafing which can cause rashes. We don't need toys, movies or stuff like that. We will be overwhelmed with that at Christmas and his 1st birthday. I don't want to be overwhelmed with clutter. But I obsess at thrift stores for awesome pictures of animals for his walls, and I shop at half price books clearance for building his library!

Some people like to buy way in advance, but my mother in law kept saying wait till after the baby shower. Do whatever you want, we didn't buy anything until I was pregnant. I didn't even know what I did or didn't need until our son was born, I have stuff I won't use..

We've been buying stuff for about 10 years now and don't have any kids yet. Although my wife was pregnant once but it wasn't by me. We had been married for 5 years at that point when she got pregnant. She said sometimes women can just get pregnant without having sex. I believed her.

I'd say anytime, she may be wanting gender specific stuff and to do an overhaul STAT once she knows, but you could start buying blankets, diapers, wipes, maybe one of those tactical baby gears for you to carry with your wee one, you know a little mommy gift might be nice right now or for when baby arrives, maybe get yourself a present too after all you helped but a baby in there.
