Low Platelets: TW- LOSS
I was induced at 39+1 and had a healthy pregnancy. Around 35 weeks I went to L&D with a stomach bug and the attending OB mentioned that my platelets had been low since they were checked in august. In august they were 137 k/ul and when the attending OB checked them, they were at 118 k/ul. I knew nothing about this so I mentioned it to my OB and asked if she could monitor them the rest of pregnancy. She said she would but it’s unnecessary because platelets drop naturally in pregnancy. At 37 weeks, I was seen by her partner because she was out the office. He put me on steroids due to my platelets. I was told low platelets could prevent an epidural due to clotting issues. When I had my son, my levels were at 112 k/ul and he did not make it. I’ve been reeling every since trying to make sense of this all. My OB is positive my platelet count had nothing to do with it but looking over my chart my very first OB appointment, my platelets were at 230 k/ul. That just seems like a tremendous drop to me and my baby was perfectly healthy otherwise. He was born alive, looked me in my eyes, took a few breaths and once they took him to the warmer that was the last time he opened his eyes.
Does anyone have any understanding about platelets and willing to share some info? I am so hurt, this was my first baby after two years of ttc and two m/cs. I thought it was finally my turn at motherhood and now I believe this was my last chance.
