High risk simply because im fat?

Is anyone else here high risk simply because they are overweight? My dr put me as high risk because my bmi is 39. I have normal BP, I don't have gestational diabetes or any kind of diabetes and I'm not I poor health due to my weight. I dint understand how I'm high risk. It's only made my anxiety worse being told I'm "high risk"

You get the privledge of a 'high risk' label (I will explain what I mean) because statistically speaking people with a BMI above a certain number have a higher probability for certain issues, even things like excess sac fluid. It absolutely doesnt mean it will happen of course, especially if overall you are a healthy woman....it just means that by labeling you high risk, youre entitled to additional testing, more frequent ultrasounds etc and your insurance by law cant deny it because you are 'high risk' and therefore it's automatically considered medically necessary in case your dr would like more scans etc. So it's easier for your dr to just slap on that label for insurance purposes. You can also get stuff like priority for scheduled induction if your hospital is getting full compared to women who are not high risk. Same happened to me, I got a big ol red HIGH RISK AMA (advanced maternal age aka youre too old for this 😅) stamp on my chart once I turned 35.  It's nothing personal, it means I get more benefits 👍

I understand you don’t want to be seen as the number on the scale, but weight is a factor in pregnancy there is just no way around it. It would be the same if you your BMI was severely low as well. It’s one of the factors that make me high risk. It really doesn’t matter if you have any issue health wise studies show that women with higher BMI are more susceptible to other issue’s throughout their pregnancy. It just is what it is. If I were you I’d be counting my lucky stars that your doc cares enough to cover all their bases instead of leaving you out in the wind and only addressing things as they pop up.

I don’t have diabetes either but yes if you are obese you are considered high risk I have two high risk factors, high blood pressure and obesity but my A1C is normal and I’m not diabetic whatsoever.
