How often should he call?

So me and my ex are split, but we have a 5 year old
We live on opposite sides of the country right now and our daughter lives with me and my husband
Based on these circumstances, how often should her bio father be calling her? Like what's a normal amount? 
In the last year he spoke to her twice, and hasn't bought anything for her, not even a birthday gift, or sent child support in 3 years.

Do you have a custody agreement? Have him on child support? If not you should

It sounds like you need go to court and get a child custody agreement and a court child support. But just remember if you do any of that you might have to move back immediate.

I would think weekly at a minimum.

If he cared enough it would be a couple times a week since he doesn't see her. But a couple times in a year is ridiculous! I wouldn't let him have any communication with her since he doesn't seem to care about her. It only hurts your daughter for him to pop in and out of her life like that.
