Should we get a lawyer?
We just moved out of our rental house today and the landlord did a walk through with us which was no big deal we had cleaned the house from top to bottom. During our walk through the landlord never said a thing to us, we asked if we would be getting some of our security deposit back and he said yes we should get majority back. Which kind of confused us after we drove away considering there's no carpet so they didn't need to hire anyone to clean carpets and the house was in move in ready condition. Well an hour later we get a text from him saying he couldn't believe we left the damages we did and he will be suing us for the cost since it'll be well over the deposit. At first we thought maybe he had the wrong number, but no he meant it towards us. So I questioned him about it and he said the damage from the doors. The only damage I could think of was often time the front door or one of the bedroom doors would sing and hit the wall which did cause it to put a hole. But my husband patched them up, we just didn't have paint to paint over them since they were special colors not just a basic white or anything like that. And we even told him about it at the walk through!!!
I'm scared to death over this! And I know the paint he would have to get isn't worth our deposit, they're selling the house now anyways so I'd assume they'd pai t more neutral anyways (I guess not) but I am just SO shocked!! When we moved in it was not at all move in ready it was so filthy they didn't even turn on the heat which during this time of year in my state you need heat so we had to literally buy those electric heaters because it was damn cold. The basement flooded on us twice because they're idiots and don't know how to lay flooring. I literally had 3 THREE notebook pages front and back with stuff written down unfortunately I didn't take copies of it for myself. However I did take picture of everything and still have those so I do feel even if this crazy guy is serious we have a strong case. But just going to court and getting a lawyer scares me especially when my state has absolutely no renter laws. It's a landlord state. What would you do??
