“Leave it it’s for guests” edit

Yesterday my niece came after work to visit us and kids.(Every time I ask her do you want something to drink or eat she would say I can’t.and I told her well if you want something you know things are so feel free to take whatever you want).

So she opened pantry (she knows i always something sweet) and asked me”hey are these chocolate for guests”?

“No,serve yourself. In my house if you see it in pantry eat it.My mom had that habit saying leave it it’s for guest. Now I hate that saying so if you see it eat it.”

“Oh haha yeah my mom was saying same thing so because of that I was asking.”

And tbh I hated when I was younger I wanted something but couldn’t have because we weren’t in good financial situations so we had to keep sweets in case someone comes and we don’t have money to buy new one.

Now thankfully I’m more stable financially so I can afford if I don’t have in house to go to store to buy more.

Edit to add: I didn’t grow up in states I moved here 6 years ago.So where I’m from it’s normal to bring out sweets to guest while drinking coffee.Think people that you see day to day basis-aunts,neighbors,mother in law, grandparents ets (like who lives close to you).

If you come to my house I will offer coffee, tea bring out water, juice something sweet to have with coffee some snacks.

I thought it’s normal to offer those things who ever comes to your house friends neighbors etc.

I mean in our community we do that. So idk how Americans do it 😅
