Engagement party?

My friends having an engagement party is it acceptable for me to wear a red dress and heels? I only either have black or red and red suits me more but I don’t want to over dress the dress code is formal/smart formal

I would opt for the black. Red to a wedding is a no, it's considered an attention grabbing color and is considered by some to be rude like youre trying to be the center vs the bride. An engagement party is less formal than a wedding, but it's still highlighting the bride, so I think the black is safer in that regard unless the red dress is patterned eg floral.

I don’t think it matters if it’s red or black. I wouldn’t even think about it and I’d just wear whatever one looks best on me. If they set the dress code as formal, I’d assume the bride will be pretty dressed up so you in a red dress isn’t going to outshine her. Idk why some people get weird about red dresses lol. It’s just another color and as long as it’s not white you’re fine.
