Twitter Amnesty
Do you agree with twitter allowing back previously banned accounts?
It was announced on Thursday that Twitter will be granting a general amnesty to banned accounts. This is in response posted poll asking users to vote on accounts that have not, “broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.” The yes vote for reinstatement was 72%.
The implications of this range beyond whether individuals use twitter or not, and into a broader societal issue. For example, incidents of racism have surged since the takeover by Elon Musk, with The Guardian reporting 99% of racist abuse of footballers in the run-up to the World Cup not being acted upon. Reinstatement of banned account could lead to a further spread of mis/disinformation, hate speech, and harassment according to experts. Law professor and vice president of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative Danielle Citron has called it, “a disaster waiting to happen,”
The counterpoint espoused by Musk is that it creates a space where a broader range of voices can be heard, and that it is what the people want (based on results of the poll).
As a follow up questions outside the poll:
Should other social media communities follow twitter’s example?
Does anyone have any personal experience with social media bans?
